the four seasons of the ojibwe

new vocabulary words

Makak – An Ojibwe word meaning “container”.  The plural form of the word is makakoon.  
Zizibkwad - An Ojibwe word meaning sugar
Staple - A basic or necessary item of food
Sugar bush – An orchard or grove of sugar maples.
Sugaring Off - An expression used to describe the process of making sugar from boiled, strained sap
Tapping – To draw liquid sap from a sugar maple tree by placing or “tapping” carved wooden pegs, with grooves down the center, into the trees at slight downward angles.
Trough – A long, narrow, open container.
