DAKOTA WINTER count

Picture
Picture by Robin Nelson adapted from Red Horse Owner’s Winter Count.
Each picture equals one year and one story.  This way, each village could keep track of the important events that made up its history.

This picture tells of a year when the people of the village found a stand of pine trees and collected the branches to line the floors of their tipis.  This helped protect them from the cold of winter.  An important event for everyone in the village!
